Old Town (Staré Město)

One of the great things about Prague is that most sightseeing can be done on foot – and nearly everything you see is beautiful. The piece-de-resistance is Old Town Square which, with its stunning ancient buildings and magnificent churches, is one of the most impressive historical sites in Europe. Luckily EPT Prague is held in December when Old Town square is brought to life by a world-famous Christmas market. Relax in one of the many bars and cafes, where you can drink hot wine and soak up the festive atmosphere.

Prague Astronomical Clock

The Astronomical Clock on the Old Town Hall is one of the major sights of the city and was first installed in 1410. It’s the third-oldest astronomical clock in the world and the oldest one still working. The clock’s intricate construction includes a ‘procession’ of the Twelve Apostles: on the hour, every hour, a small trap door opens and Christ marches out ahead of his disciples, while the skeleton of death tolls the bell. Below the Astronomical Clock are 12 medallions with the signs of the zodiac.

Prague Castle

Prague Castle is the largest medieval castle complex in Europe and well worth visiting. Set on a hill on the other side of the Vltava River from the Old Town, it provides amazing views over the whole city. This is quite a steep hill, but you can stop for hot wine on your way up (and/or on your way down.) The Changing of the Guard at the front gates takes place every hour. At noon the ceremony includes a fanfare.
